Lesedi Funeral Society (“the Company”, “we”, “our” or “us”) subscribes to the provisions of the Protection of Personal Information Act No. 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”) and respects your right to privacy and confidentiality of your Personal Information. We are committed to ensuring that Personal Information is collected, used, stored, shared and destroyed properly, lawfully and transparently.

Your Personal Information will be treated in a secure and confidential manner and only as set out in this Privacy Statement or as otherwise permitted by law.

- Funeral policy, membership, beneficiary, dependant, premium, payment and claims information.
- Health, medical, death certificate, next-of-kin and other supporting information required to administer funeral cover, process claims or provide funeral-related services.
- Financial information, including banking details, debit order information, payment history and account information.
- Online information, including cookies, IP addresses, device information and website usage information where you use our website, applications or social media channels.
- Information contained in enquiries, applications, forms, agreements, correspondence, complaints, service requests and claim documents.
- Information from public sources, regulators, administrators, insurers, intermediaries, service providers or authorised representatives where lawful and necessary.
We will only collect Personal Information that is necessary for lawful business purposes and for providing our funeral products and services.
4.Why do we collect and process Personal Information?
We collect and process Personal Information to provide funeral cover, administer memberships and policies, assess applications, collect premiums, process claims, communicate with members and beneficiaries, provide customer support, comply with legal and regulatory obligations, prevent fraud, maintain proper business records and improve our services. We may also process Personal Information where you have given consent, where processing is necessary for a contract, where we have a legal obligation, or where it is necessary to pursue a legitimate business interest in a lawful manner.
5.Sharing of Personal Information
We may share Personal Information with insurers, underwriters, administrators, reinsurers, funeral service providers, payment service providers, banks, debit order processors, claims assessors, professional advisers, regulators, law enforcement agencies and other authorised third parties where this is necessary to provide our services, comply with the law, protect our rights or fulfil a lawful business purpose. We will not sell your Personal Information to any third party.
6.Safeguarding, retention and destruction of Personal Information
We take reasonable and appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect Personal Information against loss, damage, unauthorised access, unlawful processing, disclosure or destruction. Personal Information will only be kept for as long as it is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, required by law, or needed for legitimate business, record-keeping, audit, dispute or regulatory purposes. When Personal Information is no longer required, we will destroy, delete or de-identify it in a secure manner.
7.Your rights as a Data Subject
You have the right to request access to your Personal Information, request correction or deletion of inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, outdated or unlawfully obtained Personal Information, object to the processing of your Personal Information, withdraw consent where processing is based on consent, and submit a complaint to the Information Regulator. 8.Security breach
If we become aware of a security compromise involving Personal Information, we will take reasonable steps to assess, contain and remediate the incident. Where required by POPIA, we will notify the Information Regulator and affected Data Subjects as soon as reasonably possible.
- Notify the Information Regulator where notification is required by law.
- Notify affected Data Subjects where there is a reasonable possibility that their Personal Information has been accessed or acquired by an unauthorised person.
